The entire journey to ban single-use plastic bags in California has been epic – there have been ups and downs and it almost seemed like when Governor Jerry Brown signed SB270 into law on September 30, 2014 that the trek was going to end on a high note and disposable plastic bags would quickly become a relic of the past.

I was lucky enough to get introduced to a film called Inside the Garbage of the World a couple of weeks ago on Twitter by the filmmaker himself, Philippe Carillo. You will want to follow along with him and his wife Maxine on Twitter HERE but basically, the film, explores the devastating impact pollution, and in particular plastic pollution, has on the oceans and how that in turn impacts all life on the planet. This film has lots of updated and informative info and is really worth the watch. It breaks down the plastic pollution problems, shatters myths and explains how we can work to overcome the plastic pollution problem.

“This bill is a step in the right direction – it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” Brown said. “We’re the first (state) to ban these bags, and we won’t be the last.”

Mayor Denis Coderre recently approached the City Council with a proposal to ban single-use plastic bags in retail stores throughout Montreal. This notion of a bag ban was spurred by California’s recent state-wide ban, although Montreal has proven to be very environmentally minded because many residents already bring their own reusable grocery bags when heading to the store.

Tap water has a bad rep, and there really is no reason for this. It is really great news for the environment that California passed a statewide single-use plastic bag ban and we’re still so excited. This is such a big step and will have a massive impact (for the better!) on the environment. California Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 270 but California is facing some opposition. Still, as of right now, the ban is set to go into effect starting next July, but there are some disposable plastic bag manufacturers looking to repeal this law. We are optimistic that the California bag ban will hold up and we’re also interested to see who follows California’s lead and that got us thinking about which state could be next to enact a disposable plastic bag ban.
