MassDEP Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) Takes Off
Bay State Going Green and Streamlining Waste Stream
Big changes that will have a serious impact on the waste stream are coming to Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP), recently awarded $3.2 million.
The MassDEP SMRP grant money aims to minimize trash carted off to landfills, increase recycling, and improve the efficiency of the waste stream.
This is big news for Massachusetts and will have an incredibly positive impact on the environment.
Some of the major deterrents to recycling are lack of convenience, particularly for people living in apartments or other types of multi-family dwellings, as well as lack of education and understanding.
Our reusable recycling bags can address both of these issues and make it easy for residents of Massachusetts to recycle.

MassDEP Rewards for Recycling
The MassDEP SMRP program works by giving payments to qualified communities in response to efforts made to improve recycling and reusing materials.
Those payments must be reinvested in these same recycling programs in order to further improve the effectiveness.
These improvements can include new recycling bins or carts, as well as public education and outreach campaigns.
The goal is to make it easy to recycle and help people understand how to recycle along with what items can (as well as cannot) be recycled.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker explains, “Some of the most important environmental protection work happens every day in communities throughout Massachusetts through local recycling and solid waste programs.
Baker went on to say, “With this assistance, we are ensuring that local officials, residents, and small business owners can continue protecting the Commonwealth’s neighborhoods and natural resources.”
Creating a Greener and Cleaner Community
The SMRP initiative is a bipartisan effort and it is intended to help reduce the build-up of items in landfills that can still serve a purpose.
As House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) explained, “Promoting recycling and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills is critical to protecting the environment, not only today but also for future generations.”
Implementing Reusable Recycling Bags
Our reusable recycling bags work to increase recycling rates as well as help with education efforts so it may not become necessary to give recycling strikes like Dayton.
These reusable recycling bags can be used by tenants in multi-family dwellings to collect items for recycling and carry them to a collection point.
To make recycling even easier and more effective, our reusable recycling bags can also be customized with artwork to relay lots of useful information. The bags can include a list of items that can be recycled along with a website or other resource tenants can reference to get answers to any questions they may have.
