As California tries to implement a bag ban to steer away from single-use plastic bags in favor of reusable shopping bags, the plastics industry has fought the bag ban movement from the very start. Two years ago Governor Jerry Brown signed Prop 67, which bans single-use plastic bags and levies a 10-cent fee on paper bags in any area not already impacted by a local ban. Learn more about the resistance from the plastics industry and how it lead to the ban to being put on hold.

When the idea of a statewide ban began to circulate, it made perfect sense; in 2014 Governor Jerry Brown signed measure SB270 into law that banned single-use plastic bags and levied a 10-cent fee on paper bags. This ban was set to go into action in July 2015. However, opponents managed to delay the ban.

The other day we had a question from one of our Facebook page fans asking what the problem is with paper bags. We all know there is a movement around banning single-use plastic bags, and the reasons why single-use plastic bags should be banned are pretty clear. They are made from nonrenewable resources, they do not safely breakdown, and they are a serious threat to the planet. A lot of the legislation around plastic bags includes disposable paper bags, and this leads many people to ask, “What’s the problem with paper bags?”.
The issues that make single-use plastic bags a clear problem aren’t always applicable to paper bags. After all, paper bags are made from renewable resources and often they are made from a percentage of recycled content. Paper is biodegradable, and is not a health hazard to animals, ecosystems and the planet at large in the same way as plastic bags. So really, what’s the problem? Let us break things down for you.

The invention is essentially a floating bin that collects trash on the surface of the water, eliminating the plastic ocean. It is intended to be used in marinas, private pontoons, inland waterways, residential lakes, harbors, water ways, ports and yacht clubs. The bin can be attached to a dock or boat and will collect trash, oil, fuel and detergents.
