Eco Friendly Reusable Water Bottles
-Safe, not Sorry!
Depending on where you call home, you may an increasing number of people proudly toting around reusable water bottles with them. These are the health conscious and environmentally conscious people who understand that every little thing can make a difference. They have heard the news about the negative impact of bottled water, the wide-ranging environmental damage caused by the industry at large as well as some of the shocking realities about what may actually be in those pricey bottles.
Reusable water bottles are the way of the future, and if that is not yet evident in your community, it surely will be soon. Popularity of one time use plastic water bottles is declining, and that's good news for us all.
The Jane Goodall Institute has a new campaign called ‘Project Blue’ which sheds some light on bottled drinking water. A snapshot of their findings includes the following…
Health and Economics
There have been discoveries that certain brands of ‘bottled water’ turn out to be nothing more than municipal tap water that has been filtered and then bottled. Consumers are angry that they are being taken advantage of by profit-hungry corporations. They also realize that they are being charged for something that their tax dollar has already funded.
Safety
In some areas, tap water is more thoroughly tested than the bottled kind. There have been scientific studies that have shown that tap water is safer! In Canada and the US, the bottled water industry is unregulated: scary stuff.
Energy Use
Tap water is distributed through an infrastructure which is streamlined and energy-efficient. Bottled water, however, must be transported to its various points of sale. Transportation costs a large amount in both manpower as well as fossil fuels. It is reported that about 25 % of all brands of bottled water cross national borders.
Aside from moving the product, the packaging of the water itself uses a great deal of energy. The most common material used is that of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) which is made from crude oil. In order to produce this material, many forms of pollution are spewed into the atmosphere, and, ironically, far more water is required in the making of the bottles than would ever fill those bottles.
Garbage
The plastic water bottles mostly end up in landfills where they are a growing concern due to sheer volume as well as the theory that they “take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade,” while possibly leaching toxins into the soil and groundwater. Alternately, the bottles may be sent to incineration facilities which cause further toxic emissions.
Cost
So, all things considered, which costs more: gasoline or bottled water? We think you can figure that one out.
Several major cities in North America have started banning the sale of plastic water bottles. Public outrage continues to grow. Tap water is starting to look really good, isn’t it?
There are simple environmentally-friendly options to help reduce bottled water consumption and its resulting negative effects. Reusable water bottles are the place to start. Aluminum water bottles, biodegradable water bottles and stainless steel water bottles are the top options. Add your brand name, your logo or any type of personalization you desire to show your clients and the planet that you are making a difference.
